How a Digital Service Provider Upskilled Their Team in Network Automation Without Device Access

Network automation has become increasingly important in today's digital age, especially for companies working in the Telecom domain. However, building a team of experts who can develop scripts to configure, automate, and monitor multi-vendor network devices can be a challenging task, particularly when you don't have access to the devices. This was the problem faced by a major digital service provider, which required the upskilling of a team of 70+ professionals in Python scripting.

To overcome this challenge, the company partnered with BU and LnD to co-create the right TOC (Training Outline and Curriculum) that would meet their specific needs. The next step was to hire the right and near-skill candidates who were apt for the upskilling. To ensure the candidates were the right fit, the company provided interview assistance, thereby making sure that the candidates had the necessary qualifications and experience to excel in the training.

However, due to the unavailability of physical routers, the company developed fully functional network simulator labs with real-world topologies. This was a critical part of the training process, as it enabled the participants to gain practical experience in configuring, automating, and monitoring multi-vendor network devices. The labs provided a simulated environment where participants could experiment with different configurations, test the scripts they developed, and learn from their mistakes without any risk of damaging real-world devices.

The training was unique in that it was designed as a multi-stage program for freshers and laterals with network engineering and computer science knowledge. The multi-stage program allowed the participants to progress through various levels of expertise, starting with basics of networking and Python programming, before moving on to advanced topics such as network automation, API integration, and network monitoring. This approach ensured that all participants received the necessary training to succeed in their roles, regardless of their previous experience.

The results of the training were impressive, with 100% upskilling achieved among the participants. All participants were able to be deployed in a project with productivity, indicating that the training was successful in meeting the company's objectives.

In conclusion, network automation is critical for businesses in today's digital age. However, building a team of experts who can develop scripts to configure, automate, and monitor multi-vendor network devices can be challenging, especially when you don't have access to the devices. The case study discussed in this article highlights the importance of a well-planned training program that is tailored to meet the specific needs of the company. By partnering with BU and LnD to co-create the right TOC and curriculum, providing interview assistance, developing fully functional network simulator labs, and designing a unique multi-stage training program, the company was able to upskill its team of 70+ professionals in Python scripting successfully. This resulted in 100% upskilling among the participants, enabling them to be deployed in a project with productivity. The case study serves as a valuable lesson for other companies that may be facing similar challenges in upskilling their teams in network automation.
